Empowering Palestinian Farmers and Restoring the Land Through a Tree-Planting Initiative Rooted in Heritage and Hope

MADISON, Wis., Aug. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Canaan Palestine (www.canaanpalestine.com), the leading exporter of Palestinian olive oil, celebrates the country's cultural heritage and resilience through its cornerstone philanthropic initiative, the Trees for Life Program. The heart of this initiative is a commitment to sustainable agriculture, strengthening community ties to the land, and supporting farmers' livelihoods by investing in their orchards. For Palestinians, agriculture is more than a way to support one's family; it is a living connection to history and identity. Farming is a cultural and spiritual act, a way to reclaim land, sustain communities, and protect heritage for future generations.

Launched in 2006, Trees for Life offers international communities a meaningful way to support Palestinian farmers and their families' agricultural legacy. Through 100% grassroots donations, the program provides carefully sourced seeds from native varieties cultivated by organic farmers to produce staple crops like olives and almonds, and intercrops heirloom grains such as wheat and legumes. This regenerative farming approach increases biodiversity with fruit and forest trees, including apricots, plums, carob, grapes, figs, and pomegranates, that helps maintain ecological balance.

The program prioritizes young families, women farmers, new and small-scale farmers, and those cultivating land impacted by political actions. Since its inception, it has distributed more than 429,873 seedlings to over 6,925 farmers, restoring agriculture and combating desertification. In 2025 alone, the program has helped provide resources to 750 farmers across 40 villages in the West Bank. Trees for Life is funded by PFTA's olive oil buyers, and a network of solidarity organizations in the UK, USA and Canada.

"The Trees for Life Program is about more than planting trees; it's about planting hope," says Dr. Nasser Abufarha, Founder & Director at Canaan Palestine. "Each seedling represents a promise to future generations that they will inherit not only the fruits of the land, but also the dignity, heritage, and resilience that have defined Palestinian farming for thousands of years."

Today, Canaan works with over 2,000 family farmers in the West Bank, producing Fair Trade, USDA Organic, and Regenerative Organic Certified® products from extra virgin olive oil to spreads, tapenades, and other artisanal goods. By bridging ancient agricultural wisdom with modern sustainability, the company offers consumers a way to support fair trade, ecological balance, and cultural continuity with every purchase. Canaan products are available online, at www.canaanpalestine.com, and in over 600 U.S. retailers, including Erewhon, select Whole Foods Market locations, and independent grocers.
