Milford Selects Altumint to Combat Connecticut's Worsening Speeding Crisis with Automated Enforcement Program

PR Newswire

MILFORD, Conn., Aug. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Connecticut ranks among the most dangerous states in the Northeast for speeding-related crashes, and Milford is taking action. The City has selected Altumint to launch a new automated speed and red-light enforcement program. The program is fully violator-funded and was awarded through a competitive RFP, enabling other Connecticut municipalities to use the Milford contract through cooperative agreements for their own program.

Speeding continues to be a critical issue statewide. In 2022, 38% of all traffic deaths in Connecticut were linked to speeding, significantly higher than the national average of 29% (NHTSA). State troopers made over 68,000 traffic stops before Memorial Day last year, with speeding and reckless driving as the leading causes (CT Insider).

In a Milford Speed Study, the need was clear and just as urgent:

  • Merwin Avenue (near Live Oaks School): Nearly 60% of daily traffic traveled more than 10 MPH over the posted 25 MPH limit.
  • Gulf Street (near The Academy): Over 10,000 vehicles exceeded the limit by more than 10 MPH in just four days.
  • Boston Post Road: Nearly 6,000 vehicles each day were speeding. One was clocked at over 95 MPH.

"This program will help us address a real and persistent problem," said Chief Keith Mello of the Milford Police Department. "We've reviewed the data. It's clear the ATESD technology can help improve safety on our roads."

The program will also include red-light enforcement at high-risk intersections. With Altumint, both programs will be implemented at no cost to taxpayers, with all funding generated through citations.

"Milford's contract was competitively awarded, so other communities can use their contract to adopt this program quickly," said Jason Norton, CRO at Altumint. "We truly appreciate the partnership and the due diligence of Milford on their safety program."

Implementation is expected to begin this summer with site selection, community outreach, and the launch of both speed and red-light enforcement phases.
